Simplified fraction
3/4
Lowest terms.
Mixed number
3/4
Useful for improper fractions.
Decimal type
Terminating decimal
Denominator factors are only 2 and 5.
Step-by-step explanation
- 1.Divide the numerator by the denominator: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
- 2.The fraction 3/4 is already in lowest terms.
- 3.Multiply the decimal by 100 to get the percent: 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
- 4.The simplified denominator has only 2 and 5 as prime factors, so the decimal terminates and the value is exact.
How to Convert a Fraction to a Decimal
Simple fraction
Divide the numerator by the denominator. For 3/4, compute 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
Mixed number
Convert the fraction part, then add the whole number. For 2 1/2, 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5, then 2 + 0.5 = 2.5.
Improper fraction
Divide directly. For 7/4, compute 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75, which is the mixed number 1 3/4.
Percent equivalent
Multiply the decimal by 100. For 0.75, that is 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
Negative fraction
Keep the sign through the division. For -5/8, the result is -0.625.
Rounding
Pick the number of decimal places. Repeating decimals are rounded to that length.
Common Fraction to Decimal Values
| Fraction | Decimal | Percent | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 0.5 | 50% | Terminating |
| 1/3 | 0.333… | 33.33% | Repeating |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 25% | Terminating |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 75% | Terminating |
| 1/5 | 0.2 | 20% | Terminating |
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 12.5% | Terminating |
| 2/3 | 0.666… | 66.67% | Repeating |
| 5/8 | 0.625 | 62.5% | Terminating |
Terminating vs Repeating Decimals
Terminating
The decimal ends after a fixed number of digits, such as 1/8 = 0.125. This happens when the simplified denominator only has the prime factors 2 and 5.
Repeating
The decimal goes on forever in a pattern, such as 1/3 = 0.333... This happens when the simplified denominator has a prime factor other than 2 and 5.
Integer
The fraction divides evenly, such as 8/4 = 2. The simplified denominator becomes 1.
Understanding Your Result
Decimal value
The numerator divided by the denominator, rounded to your chosen number of places.
Percent
The decimal multiplied by 100, useful for grades, discounts, and probabilities.
Simplified fraction
The same fraction written in lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.
Mixed number
A whole number plus a proper fraction, which is easier to read for improper fractions.
Decimal type
Whether the decimal is an integer, terminates, or repeats.
