What the IP lookup result means

Public IP address

The address websites and online services can usually see when your browser connects to them.

Visible country

The country-level network signal associated with the lookup request. This is not GPS location.

IP version

IPv4 addresses use four number groups, while IPv6 addresses use a longer hexadecimal format.

VPN or proxy effect

If you use a VPN, proxy, or corporate gateway, the displayed IP may belong to that network instead of your normal connection.

Public IP, private IP, IPv4, and IPv6

IP addresses can describe different parts of a network. This tool focuses on the public IP address visible to websites.

IPv4

The older and still widely used IP format, written as four number groups such as 203.0.113.10.

IPv6

A newer IP format with a much larger address space, written with hexadecimal groups such as 2001:db8::1.

Public IP

An internet-facing address visible to websites, APIs, and online services you connect to.

Private IP

A local network address used inside homes, offices, and routers, such as 192.168.1.20.

Common use cases

  • Checking whether your VPN is active
  • Finding your public IP before troubleshooting
  • Confirming your visible country or region
  • Testing whether a proxy changes your visible IP
  • Sharing your public IP with hosting or support teams
  • Understanding why websites show regional content
  • Checking whether your network route changed
  • Comparing Wi-Fi, mobile data, VPN, or office network results

Why IP location can be limited

  • IP location is approximate and network-based.
  • It does not use your device GPS location.
  • VPNs, proxies, and corporate networks can change the visible IP.
  • Mobile networks may show a carrier gateway instead of your city.
  • Some browser-safe lookups only expose country-level information.
  • Different lookup sources may return different location details.

VPN, proxy, and network notes

If you use a VPN, this tool will usually show the VPN server IP and country instead of your normal home or mobile network.

Corporate networks, proxies, and school networks may route traffic through shared gateways, so many users can appear to have the same public IP.

Mobile carriers can route traffic through regional network points, which may make the detected country or network different from your expectation.

Running the lookup before and after connecting to a VPN is a quick way to confirm whether your visible public IP changed.

Privacy and lookup notes

This page displays your public IP address and basic lookup details so you can review them in your browser. Your public IP is normally visible to websites you visit. Country-level location is approximate and may vary depending on network routing, VPNs, proxies, and lookup sources.
